You will ride through dense bush and across valleys of spectacular views. Our horses are mild mannered, easy to handle, and have been bred and reared for the territory.

Our most popular horse trek has been the 2 day ride down the Waiau Valley, following the river. An overnight stay is essential. The Waiau Hut, Department of Conservation provides basic accommodation. Food and gear is carried in by pack horse.

This adventure is best shared with family or friends. We recommend parties no larger than 5 riders. See Rates on the Home page for prices.

Lake Waikaremoana was formed 2200 years ago by a huge landslide, which blocked a narrow gorge along the Waikaretaheke River. Water backed up behind the landslide to form the lake, which is 248 metres deep in parts. Resembling a fiord, Lake Waikaremoana is the focal point for activities in the Te Urewera National Park and is much loved by hikers, fishermen and hunters. The Waikaremoana Track is one of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’. Here is a link to a detailed map of the Te Urewera.

The closest anyone will come to paradise is a tramp through one of Te Urewera's most peaceful walks down the Waiau Valley.

The closest anyone will come to paradise is a tramp through one of Te Urewera’s most peaceful tranquil walk tracks down the Waiau Valley. Ahurei Adventures offers guided walks for 1,2, or 3 days. Your lead guide will be Richard White, who can share local history and legends with you, pointing out significant landmarks, or simply join you in enjoying the peaceful concophony of bird song and the flowing river.

You will be wowed by the sheer rugged beauty of the mountainous ranges which flank the Waiau river all the way to your hut. There are over 90 river crossings on this walk so be prepared to get your feet wet!

Many trampers have caught a glimpse of the whio or blue duck, one of New Zealand’s endangered birds. Here in the Waiau Valley the whio continues to thrive. Many trampers come to witness first hand the majesty of Nga Tamariki a Tane (Children of Tane – god of the forests) or the Podocarp family. Some of the common ones are the Rimu, Totara, Tawa, Maire, Kahikatea, and Rata. Some 100′s years old, and some 1,000′s years old.

We recommend you enjoy your tramping adventure with family or friends, and bring a great camera to capture this once in a life time experience!
